The world number one recovered from losing the opening leg to the American, who started brightly by landing double top to take the lead.
Lloyd levelled the match with double 18 in the second leg, and took the next four to move 5-1 up, punishing missed doubles from Veljic to step in and take two of those legs.
The American won the seventh leg by landing double 16 with his first dart, but Lloyd hit a maximum in the next before checking out double ten for the win.

ADRIAN LEWIS 6-0 JIM WIDMAYER ADRIAN LEWIS set up a tasty second round clash with Colin Lloyd in the World Series of Darts with a whitewash victory over Jim Widmayer.
Lewis' finishing power proved too strong for his experienced opponent, with Widmayer missing a host of doubles during the match.
He was unable to land four doubles in the opening two legs as Lewis took command.
The 21-year-old then landed double 16 to extend his advantage to 3-0, and punished further misses in the next leg by landing double four.
Lewis landed a maximum on his way to the next, and also opened the sixth leg with a 180 before hitting double ten for the match.

ANDY JENKINS 6 - 1 TOM CURTIN ANDY JENKINS moved into the second round of the World Series of Darts with a solid display to see off Tom Curtin 6-1.
Curtin won the 12th and final pre-qualifying event for the World Series of Darts last month, but was unable to progress into the last 16.
Jenkins took the first three legs without reply to put himself in the driving seat, landing two maximums on his way to the third leg.
Curtin took out a tidy 95 finish to get off the mark by winning the fourth leg - and missed double top in the next for the same finish.
Jenkins stepped in to land double five and push out to 4-1, and won the next two legs to seal his place in round two.

DENIS OVENS 6 - 4 BILL DAVIS BILL DAVIS came close to producing a fairytale victory over Denis Ovens in the World Series of Darts - pushing the world number nine all the way before going down 6-4.
Davis was one of the four players who came through the Friday Night Madness qualifying event, defeating top seed Darin Young along the way.
The Philadelphia-based star had just 14 hours to recover before stepping onto the stage at the Mohegan Sun Casino, but showed his quality with a good display.
Ovens opened up the game with neat two-dart checkout, but Davis copied his double eight finish to level the game.
Ovens pulled away by winning the next three legs, but Davis regained his composure on the doubles to pull back to 5-4.
While Davis stepped in to win the ninth leg and remain in the game, he was unable to prevent Ovens finally landing double five with his last dart to seal victory.

PETER MANLEY 6 - 3 RAY CARVER PETER MANLEY secured safe passage into the last 16 of the World Series of Darts with a 6-3 win over leading American Ray Carver.
Carver reached the last 16 at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship last year, and was tipped by many American pundits to upset the odds and defeat Manley.
He came from 3-0 down the cut the gap to 4-3 against his more experienced opponent, but Manley pulled away to move into the second round.
Carver missed doubles in the opening two legs as Manley took the lead, before the Carlisle-based World Championship finalist took out a 116 finish for a 12-dart leg in the third.
Carver stepped in with double four after Manley missed double top for a 142 checkout in the next, and the American landed double one to reduce the arrears to 3-2.
Manley hit his trademark double top in the next leg, but Carver won the seventh to increase the pressure on his opponent.
But Manley rose to the challenge, and won the next two legs without reply to earn his place in round two.

MARK WALSH 6 - 4 JEFFREY RUSSELL MARK WALSH overcame a spirited fightback from Jeffrey Russell to win a place in round two of the World Series of Darts with a 6-4 victory.
The 2005 Budweiser UK Open finalist looked set for a comfortable win when he took a 4-0 lead with some clinical finishing.
Russell - one of the four Friday Night Madness qualifiers for the World Series of Darts - found his rhythm and began the comeback in the fifth leg by landing double top with his first dart.
He took out a 54 checkout in the bizarre fashion of 11, treble three and double 17 in the sixth leg and hit double ten to cut the gap to 4-3.
Russell also had one dart to level the game in the eighth leg, with Walsh stepping in to land double five after his opponent was off target on double top for a 115 finish.
Russell hit scores of 177 and 140 on his way to winning the ninth leg, and set up another shot at double top in the next with a 132 score.
But Walsh kept his cool to take out 115 with treble 19, 18 and double top to seal a hard-fought win.

ROLAND SCHOLTEN 6 - 1 ROGER CARTER ROLAND SCHOLTEN produced a polished display to overcome Roger Carter 6-1 and move into the last 16 of the World Series of Darts.
The Dutchman was clinical in his finishing to maintain the PDC stars' 100 percent record against their American counterparts.
Scholten opened the match with finishes of 91 and 76, and took out double top to create a 3-0 cushion.
Carter responded in style, opening the fourth leg with scores of 180 and 140 before hitting double 16 to get off the mark.
Scholten regained a three-leg cushion by winning the fifth leg on double top, and made Carter pay for missing seven darts at the double in the next to go 5-1 up.
Carter also missed two darts at top in the next, with Scholten showing him the way by landing his first dart in the bed to complete the win.

DENNIS PRIESTLEY 6 - 1 JOE EFTER DENNIS PRIESTLEY ensured his place in the second round of the World Series of Darts with a 6-1 win over Joe Efter.
Priestley was never in trouble, despite a spirited display from local favourite "Bazooka Joe".
The two-time World Champion took the first five legs without reply, including a 110 finish in the second.
Efter missed one dart at double 18 for a 103 finish in the fifth, but did manage to get off the mark by landing his first dart at double top in the sixth - after Priestley was off-target with a string of darts for the match.
But the Yorkshireman managed to hit double 16 in the next to end another American's dream.
