LEADING American player Ray Carver has qualified for the World Series of Darts, overcoming Jeff Russell 4-1 to win Saturday's event in Marlborough, MA.

Carver, who appeared at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship last December, is the tenth of 12 pre-qualifiers for the tournament, which offers $1m to an American winner.

He came out on top from 250 entrants in Marlborough, producing some superb darts throughout the day to book his place at the Mohegan Sun.

Leading seeds Davis Snider and Brad Wethington both fell at the second round stage, while Larry Butler - the winner of the inaugural World Matchplay in 1994 - came out of retirement for the tournament and reached the semi-finals.

He lost 4-1 to Russell in their last four clash, with Thomas Curtin needing a 138 finish to win his only leg against Carver.

Carver then went on to win 4-2 against Russell, taking a 3-0 lead with legs of 13, 14 and 15 darts.

Russell responded with a 118 finish, but Carver won the next leg to book his place in the World Series of Darts.

"Today was one of those days - I was in the zone," said Carver. "The triple twenty looked like a big pie, I felt I could it anytime I wanted, and even the doubles seemed huge.

"I just felt I couldn't miss."

Russell said: "Ray was in control from the start, he was phenomenal.

"He let me look at only one double from 118 and I hit it for a 15-darter but I can't complain about losing because Ray was fantastic."
