TIMOTHY GROSSMAN is the latest player to win a place in the World Series of Darts, following a 4-3 win over David Marienthal in Saturday's Connecticut Qualifier.

Held in Windsor Locks, the Qualifier was attended by an incredible 259 hopefuls, who were looking to play for $1 million at the Mohegan Sun Casino in their home state in May.

The opening four legs were shared, with the first two being won in 17 darts and the next pair in 14 darts.

Marienthal moved 3-2 up in the next with a 13-darter, setting up a double 18 finish with a maximum 180.

Grossman hit back to win the sixth leg and take the tie into a decider, and he was first to the double in the next before taking out double 15.

"I came here feeling very good and very confident," said the 40-year-old from Hudson.

"I haven't played much in the past couple of years, but once they announced the World Series of Darts, I started practicing again for about two hours a day or every other day and more on weekends.

"I'll probably take a week or two off now just to catch my breath, then I'll really get focused (for the World Series)."

Top seed Ray Carver was defeated 4-2 by West Hartford's Jeff Steinberg in the fourth round.

Number four seed Jerry Van Loan, who was runner-up in the New York Qualifier, lost 4-3 in the fifth round to Peter Morrison, while other seeds Marilyn Popp and Carolyn Mars were early casualties.
