World Series of Darts: FAQ

WSOD Prize Purse
Q: Why do I need to provide a birth certificate or passport to play in this event?

Actually, there are one-million reasons why you’ll need to verify your U.S. citizenship, or one-million dollars worth, to be more precise!

The PDC is guaranteeing a huge $900,000 bonus should an American capture first place in this event —for a cool $1 Million dollar payday! However, the legal-beagles who are overseeing the underwriting on this unprecedented prize purse have drawn a line in the proverbial sand and stipulated that, to honor this guarantee, our players’ citizenship must be absolutely —and officially— verifiable. That brings us to this requirement, as stated in the event “Rules & Regulations” documentation (It’s number one on the list):

    1. Proof of US Citizenship
All participants must be US citizens and 21 years of age or  older. Proof of US citizenship must be presented by the persons who qualify within 7 days of qualifying. Acceptable forms of identification proving US citizenship are as follows:

    • Certified US Birth Certificate
    • Valid US Passport
    • US Certificate of Naturalization.

Only one of these documents is required. However, these are the ONLY documents that will be accepted as valid proof of citizenship to participate in this event. Certified birth certificates must include your given name and surname, date and place of birth, date the birth record was filed and the seal or other certification of the official custodian of such records. Photocopies of a certified birth certificate are NOT acceptable. (Please note: Drivers Licenses, Social Security Cards and other similar forms of identification DO NOT qualify as proof of citizenship, and will NOT be considered valid.)

This requirement, of course, leaves a few top North American based players out in the cold; no green card holders or Canadian citizens will be permitted to compete in this year’s World Series event.

At The Regional Qualifiers:
Your “Proof of Citizenship” identification is NOT required to compete at the regional qualifying events. However, should you win a regional qualifier, you will need to provide it to BEM/PDC within 7-10 days of the completion of the event.

At The Friday Night Madness Event:
You must bring your “Proof of Citizenship” ID with you to the Mohegan Sun. You will not even be permitted to register or check-in for the event without it —even if you pre-registered online! (Since the main event starts the very next morning; and since literally anyone could score a spot on stage, the PDC is leaving nothing to chance here: You must have your acceptable “Proof of Citizenship” ID in hand at registration for the Friday Night Madness event, or you will NOT play! No refunds.)

One final bit of advice here... If you don’t have a valid passport, and you haven’t seen your birth certificate in, um... years, we strongly suggest that you start going through your closets and drawers as soon as possible. If for some reason you can’t locate it, and then end up needing to request a new certified one for the custodian of records, well, that can sometimes take weeks —or months— to process!   You get the idea; be prepared.
