KOTZEBUE LIONS CLUB SPRING TOURNAMENT
$5,000 |  Kotzebue, AK  | April 7-9, 2006

The Kotzebue Lions Club Spring dart tournament is held in Kotzebue, Alaska, a town of around 3,200 people situated on a peninsula in Kotzebue Sound in the Bering Sea just above the Artic Circle in North Western Alaska. There are no trees in Kotzebue.  Wooden pallets from shipping crates are burned in wood burning fireplaces in the winter. Otherwise, the only wood available is driftwood that washes up from the Kotzebue Sound in the summer months. Residents have to travel as much as 25 miles for driftwood to stock for the winter.

Matt Tekker, who is the tournament director for the Kotzebue tournament, works for the Native Medical Center, a 17 bed hospital owned and operated by the Inupiat people of this region, as manager of the Bio-Medical Center and has been running this tournament for 3 years.

Since the only way to reach Kotzebue is by plane this time of year as the Kotzebue Sound freezes over in winter, Matt says that they seldom get players from outside of Kotzebue.  They occasionally will get players from Nome or Anchorage, but are still able to offer a $5,000 tournament to the local players annually.

Now that the tournament is over, most of the local attention turns to ice fishing, snowmobiling and  snowshoeing.
