Congratulations to Gerry Convery, Manitoba – Canada’s #1
By Kip Morrish

I completed an interview with Gerry a few months ago, however, there is a very good reason why I am again having a chat with this very friendly and hardworking Manitoba Irishman. Folks from Manitoba never dreamed that they would one day have the honor of saying that the #1 ranked Canadian came from their province.  This gentleman has worked very hard to achieve this standing and we all hope that his trip to France for the World Cup as a member of Team Canada will be a just reward for his efforts.

How long have you been traveling extensively for the sole purpose of gaining the #1 ranking?

This has been my main aim for the past three years.

That just shows that hard work has its just rewards! I am sure that your extensive traveling has been quite a burden to your family.  Have they been supportive of you during this time?

My family has always been very supportive of the time I spend traveling to dart tournaments.  Now that the kids are older and independent, it leaves much more time for traveling and allows my wife Teresa to travel with me.  She spends a lot of time marking score for me.

When did you finally realize that you had reached the #1 standing in Canada?

Both Carl Mercer and myself traveled to Whitehorse in the Yukon to take part in the Yukon Open. Both of us knew that the winner would be going to France.  However, I did have to wait for a couple of hours for the official announcement to be made by Phil Robertson, NDFC President. That was the longest two hours in my life!

I believe that you have attended the World Masters in England, however, the World Cup is a little different. What were your feelings when you realized that you were a member of the team without the need to play-off in June?

As you well know Kip, being from Manitoba and no doubt having watched me closely, you know that at the last couple of World Cup qualifiers I have come so close to making the Team. However, close doesn’t count, (we’re playing the wrong game!).  It’s a very humble feeling to get the chance to play for my country (or should I say my adoptive country) at the World Cup, something I have striven for over the past few years.  It sure will be nice to be able to relax in June knowing I don’t have to play in that qualifier.

We know that to be #1 in Canada was one of your goals and that has now been achieved. I do hope that this will not be the last that we see of Gerry Convery. I am sure you still have some goals and I would be interested in knowing what they are?

The only goal that I really set for myself is to play darts to the best of my ability, at a high standard and to continue to enjoy playing the game, wherever that may take me. If more good fortune comes my way, that would be great.  If not, so be it. I will look back at this achievement and cherish it all the more.

Thank you very much for your time Gerry. As another implanted Canadian and Manitoban, please believe that myself and the rest of the Manitoba players are so proud of your achievements and thank you very much for putting Manitoba on the map!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Kip for your time to do this interview. I would also like to thank the MDAI Board of Directors and all the dart players in Manitoba for their support over the years.
