Dear BEN,
I really enjoyed the article Relentless Hours by Ralph Chavez (May/June 2005 BEN issue), especially the bit about concentration. The way he explained it made me see where I have tons of room for improvement. Yep, it’s a mind game.
However, with the relentless practice hours comes the possibility of a repetitive motion injury. I
speak from experience here. Stretch your arm and shoulder muscles and tendons before and after those long sessions to avoid a miserable, painful, takes-forever-to-heal
dart throwing injury. This is where the adage “no pain; no gain” does NOT apply.
Once you have injured your throwing arm or shoulder, you are susceptible to repeat injuries. So, by all means practice relentlessly, but please practice and play safely.
Respectfully, —E. Irene Goodwin, aka ‘Mean Irene’
