The Billiard le Skratch Sarantos Retsinas Memorial Quebec Dart Player’s Open
began with a Draw Doubles on Friday evening that saw 224 enter, the largest in the tournament’s 6 year history. The tournament was held in beautiful Montreal over the May 14-16 weekend. Lionel Sams and Mark Sheen partnered to win in the final match over Dave Marshall and Claude St. Pierre. Sams and Sheen agreed that their victory was a good way to start the tournament.
Caterina Retsinas, host and organizer of the Billiard le Skratch Sarantos Retsinas
Memorial Quebec Dart Player’s Open, surrounded herself with dedicated volunteers who, like her, wanted to insure the future of the tournament in memory of
Sarantos Retsinas, whose vision inspired the event and the long time director Carol Leger, who sadly passed away shortly after the 2003 tournament.
Janet Leggo, Susan Gouthro, and Jessie Bonner took over the tournament directing in memory of Leger.
Saturday began the singles events in earnest with the men divided into 16 round robin
groups of 10 or 9 for a total of 144 individuals. The top 4 from each group would advance to the knockout championship on Sunday to fill the final 64. The men
played 5 games each in the round robin to determine which four from each group would advance.
The record number of women were divided into 4 round robin groups of 10 each and
again four from each group would advance to the Sunday knockout championship. The women also played 5 games each to determine the four that would advance.
Sunday’s events began with the men’s and women’s consolation singles for those
unfortunate enough to fail to make it through their round robin group. The consolation knock-out was followed by the championship singles for both men and women. The
formats for the consolation events were best of 7 games of 501 while the men’s championship featured matches of best of 5 sets, each set being best of 3 legs. The women’s
championship played best of 3 sets, each set best of 3 legs.
Robin Curry bested Trish Grzesik in the women’s championship final 2 sets to nil
while Johanne Tremblay topped Sandra Kimpton in the women's consolation singles.
Colin Lloyd was on fire all day.
He got a break early in the day, being down two sets to none to Alan Warriner and looking at elimination, when Warriner suddenly went cold and Lloyd stole a game that led to a three straight sets victory.
Thanking Warriner for the gift, Lloyd then went on to defeat Gaston Gagne 3 set to nil,
defending champion Dennis Priestley 3 sets to nil, Terry Hayhurst who beat John Part just before his match with Lloyd 3 sets to nil and Roland Scholten
in the final 3 sets to nil. Scholten defeated Lionel Sams on the way to the final in a thrilling 5 set nail biter.
It was Lloyd’s day and he knew it from the start. “My heart was really into
it today and this victory means a whole lot to me,” commented a very please Colin Lloyd.
Chuck Bruyea took out Mike Gauthier in the final of the men’s consolation singles 4 games to
1. Gauthier couldn’t seem to get his game on track once he took the stage, playing under what he had been performing to get to the stage. Bruyea was very pleased to be the winner and is looking forward to coming back next year.
