The Golden Harvest Cup
By Jay Tomlinson

What a final day of competition at the North American Golden Harvest Cup!  Even though the prize money was significantly less than the previous year, down to $100,000 the competition was outstanding with 125 men and 65 women in the competition.  The tournament still attracted many of the regular Pro players from Europe, but it also had a very nice contingent of players over from  Japan, expanding the international flavor of the tournament, and the Canadians really came out to support their tournament.

Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods and Molson’s were two of the major sponsors loyal to the North American Golden Harvest Cup stepping up to continue their support of this great event. Ken Finch and Kevin Thorsteinson, along with the entire Golden Harvest Executive, worked very hard to continue the tournament after losing several major sponsors during the year.  The foundation for the Golden Harvest has been strengthened and the future appears bright for the Golden Harvest to continue.

The tournament began Thursday evening with the Draw Doubles mixer event. Matches were called and proceeded directly to the final where Mark Robinson and Doug Scanlon took the first place prize. Players retired for the night to prepare for the next two days of positioning round robin competition.

After two days of round robin group competition to determine the seeding, the top  four men’s seeds were Mick Manning, followed by Ronnie Baxter, Colin Lloyd and Alan Warriner. The top four women were Patricia Ferrell, followed by Ivy Weishlow, Mandy Fleck and Gayl King.

In the Sunday knockout competition, the men would play best of 3 legs, best of 5 sets, while the women would play best of 3 legs, best of 3 sets.  The format would become longer once the players reached the semi final stage matches. The women would play best of 3 legs, best of 5 sets while the men would play best of 3 legs, best of 7 sets.

The Men’s Semi-Finals

Reaching the final four in the men’s bracket were Wesley Newton, Daisuke Takeyama,  Colin Lloyd and John Part.  First up on stage were Newton and Takeyama.  The first set proved to be a huge set for both players in different ways.  Takeyama took the first leg in 20 darts and with first throw. Newton returned in the second with an 18 darter to level the set. With the throw, Takeyama missed two darts at double 16 with Newton back on 156, but he never got another shot as Newton Photo: John Part & Yukari Nishikawapunched out the 156 to take the first set and set a tone for the rest of the match.

Takeyama fought back in the second only to see Newton finish from 111 in the  first game and take the final leg of the set with the darts in 18.  Down 2 sets to none, Takeyama pulled one back with  the darts in set 3.  Not wanting to let the momentum swing to Takeyama, Newton took...
