The Canadian Nationals - A Week in Winnipeg, Manitoba
by Kip Morrish
After an absence of twenty-one years, the national championships were held at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After months and months of preparation by the volunteers from Manitoba, the time for the events finally arrived.
The adults travelled to Winnipeg in June and another successful week of darts were seen. There were a few surprises this week. A couple of players who have been lurking in the background for a number of years were finally able to break through this year and our Canadian champions are Jeff Smith from New Brunswick and Robin Curry from Ontario.
Further mention must be made of Robin’s activities at the 2008 National Championships. Robin is a consistent member of Team Ontario and this year she attained a standing that has only been achieved once in the past - a Triple Crown win. She won the Ladies Doubles with her partner Kim Whaley-Hilts. She won the Singles and finally she won the Mixed Doubles with her partner Andre Carman.
Photo Caption: Robin Curry and Andre Carman from Ontario won the Canadian Nationals Mixed Doubles competition. This was Robin’s third victory at the Nationals on 2008 accomplishng a Triple Crown win. She also won the Women’s Singles and the Women’s Doubles with her partner Kim Whaley-Hilts.
That is quite an achievement and as I mentioned, has only been achieved once before by Gayl King in 2000. Keep up the good work Robin and we’ll see you in St. Hyacinthe in 2009.
The youth event was held on the Victoria Day weekend (May 15 – 18 inclusive. Youth from ten provinces were in attendance with only Prince Edward Island and the Northwest Territory being unable to field a team. We are hoping that they will join our ranks in the not too distant future. Unfortunately, there was not much for activity close to the hotel, however, the pool and the water slides saw a lot of action.
The Sportsmanship Awards were given to Tiffany Drake and Jeremy Miller, both from Newfoundland/Labrador. This is the fourth consecutive year that Jeremy has received this award so he must have one great personality. Incidentally, this is voted on by the participants (youth).
In closing, a special thanks to the Manitoba volunteers who did a great job of looking after everybody and a great big hug to our handyman Wally who went everywhere we sent him with a smile on his face.

Quebec's Martin Treblay
By Kip Morrish
I do not know who Martin Tremblay is, but I am sure he knows who I am. That was my first disadvantage in writing this interview. My second disadvantage was that I, unfortunately, don’t speak a lick of French and Martin speaks very little English. Being very good friends with the NDFC General Secretary, Mary Dezan, I am very thankful for her help as our interpreter in completing this interview. I hope I have done justice to the job, and hopefully, Mary will oblige by translating back into French for Martin.
Martin Tremblay is a resident of Montreal, Quebec, and makes his living with a company that manufactures airplane parts. Fortunately, this company is very understanding with regard to Martin’s darting skills and he has no problem obtaining time off to attend some tournaments.
Although Martin speaks very little English, he is learning more and more all the time through participating in tournaments and travelling out of the province of Quebec. Martin has no problem when traveling with his partner (Nancy St. Croix, who does speak a bit of English) when he participates in tournaments. She is also a very good dart player and they travel together.
When not playing darts, Martin often visits his mother who prepares his favorite dish, her chicken. They try and visit his mother every Sunday when there is no dart tournament. When it comes to TV, he likes to watch sports and naturally his favorite hockey team is the Montreal Canadians. When not playing darts, he likes playing cards. Poker is his game of choice.
Nancy St. Croix and Martin Tremblay, partners in darts and life.
Martin has been playing darts since he was about 13. His parents were dart players and there was a dartboard in the basement. So, he started playing and took great pleasure when he played against his parents.
He started playing at the provincial level during the mid 1990’s. Unfortunately, he developed the famous darters sickness – dartitis – and he quit playing for six years. Returning in 2004, he won his first Provincial Championship and attended the National Championships for the first time. Missing in 2005, he returned in 2006 and again as the Quebec Champion in 2007.
When I first contacted Martin, I asked him about his goals, and his first goal was to win the Quebec Provincial Championships which he has accomplished. His second goal was to finish in the top 4 in Canada and win an invitation to the World Masters. Well, that goal was achieved this year in 2008 when he finished second on the ranking list.
Martin and Nancy practice a minimum of one hour per day. They follow the 170-Finish route which gives them good practice on the higher finishes. Then, a week prior to a major tournament his practice time is doubled.
He plays in the men’s Super League and participates in all the tournaments in Quebec and some in Ontario. This past year he travelled to Edmonton to partake in the Klondike Open. He also participated this year in the PDC US Open and North American Darts Championship in Connecticut in May and in the Kitchener PDPA Player’s Championship this past August.
As words of encouragement for our youth players, Martin tells them to persevere with their practice so that they can excel in the sport. It is when they are young and able to adapt easier and learn quicker that practice helps them the most, and it is also very good for their math skills.
Matin Tremblay is steady on the line with good form.
When asked what he thought would improve the level of darts in this country, Martin believes that we should have a team of super players, a team that could travel and play with the Pros at least four or five times a year. This would help promote darts in Canada and would help to promote Canada to the rest of the world. This would be a marvellous idea, however, unfortunately only in our dreams with the present cost of air fares and fuel prices!
